One important feature of the Castellorizo Forum will be this genealogy board, the aim of which will be to provide members with a convenient way of sharing, and accessing, genealogical information about Castellorizo.
The most accessible source of genealogical information is popular memory which carries with it, from generation to generation, knowledge of family relationships. It is a valuable, yet fragile, source of information and its reliability fades as each generation passes. One aim of the Castellorizo Forum will be to enable memory of family linkages to be recorded and shared so that this critical reservoir of information becomes accessible for a new generation of Castellorizians.
Another source of genealogical information on the extensive family networks of the island is the collection of five surviving volumes of dowry contracts that span the period 1895-1930. These record, with considerable detail, nearly all of the marriages conducted on the island in this period. While conveniently spanning the Ottoman, Greek, French and Italian chapters of the island's early twentieth century history, they also preserve the terms upon which property was conveyed through marriage during these turbulent times. As such, they serve as an invaluable tool for the gathering of genealogical information on the residents of Castellorizo during this period.
We also have at our disposal a large collection of other archival documents sourced from across the globe that add to the genealogical pool of knowledge on Castellorizo's population. Added to these is the considerable work already done by a number of private researchers who have compiled their own family trees and collated significant information about a number of the island's clans.
Contributors to the Castellorizo Forum are encouraged to share their ancestral knowledge and exchange information that might assist others to expand their own understanding of their familial links to the island.
Please feel free to post your comments and/or questions. With the co-operation of all involved we will hopefully assist each other to trace our respective roots back to Castellorizo and thereby increase our knowledge of the experiences of those who came before us.

Hi Nicholas Congratulations and well done on the new Castellorizian website. This is a wonderful concept and I hope that I can assist in the input of information, especially that relating to families residing in Western Australia. I do have a website that has genealogical info relating mainly to WA families and their ancestors from Castellorizo which has over 4000 Cazzie names online to date. I have been working on and compiling the data for over 10 years. Information on living people is restricted and only available by Login. It is a work in progress and much of the info from genealogical resources is yet to be varified by family members. The site is at www.castellorizo.orgAny of the geni information and numerous Cazzie photographs that are on my personal website are available for you to include in the Castellorizian site if you deem appropriate. Best wishes for what I am sure is going to be a valued resource for Castellorizians worldwide. Allan (Agapitos) Cresswell

Dear Nicholas, Great Website! My father came out from Cazzie when he was a baby. My mother was born here but has Cazzie ancestry. Unfortunately, I have only been able to visit the beloved island once but it was one of the highlights of my life. I totally agree that we must try to preserve the fragile nature of our past and I commend your efforts in this regard. I look forward to being part of that effort. Dear Nicholas, I have only just become aware of this Forum & site through an E-Mail I received today. Although I have been to Cassie just 5 years ago,I was very impressed, both by the enchantment of the Harbour & remoteness from the Greek mainland. My father and his family managed to secret themselves out of the island, which at that time was an Italian mandate. They had to leave by night in a small sailboat and managed with a great deal of adventure to reach the Greek mainland. One of his uncles,Dimitrios, made notoriety by leading a party of Cassie merchants to the Turkish mainland and saving them from being murdered by Turkish brigands living in the nearby mountains. They returned unharmed. His other uncles worked together felling trees on the Turkish mainland and transporting them bach to Cassie for shipbuilding & manufacture of coak. My paternal Great grandfather was called Markos Alvanos, this being a nickname because he originated from Epirus near Ioannina, and was a Vestmaker for Ali Pasha. These a some of the stories handed down to me by my father before he passed away in 1979. I have more to tell, but it would make a whole book so I leave this much with you,for those of us still interested in our heritage. I remain yours respectfully. Emmanuel Marcou. (emmanuel2aus@yahoo.com.au) very impressed

Hi Nicholas, I have traced my family back to my fathers grandfather, and I have found that we are related to the Papalazaros clan and that my fathers grandmother was born in Crete. I wonder if any one can help further. Also my grandmother (Irene Apoifis) nee Barbayiannis did tell me that some people called our family, Tsaimantsi as my grandfather brought timber from a Turkish island back to Castellorizzo. Would appreciate any info. Thanks Con Apoifis

Dear Nicholas, although our family is satisfied with results so far ascertained,we remain with the problem of identifying the Ancestry of our great Grandfather,Markos "Alvanos". I realise that your site is mainly concerned with aiding Castellorizian members, and I wonder if it would be possible to trace original backgrounds for many that would have been expelled for one reason or another from other parts of Asia Minor or the Greek Homeland. One of my fathers cousins, recently deceased,Dimitrios "Alavanos" nee Marcou, who remained in Rhodes, claimed that some time ago,he had engaged in researching the family tree in Greece, and the indications were at that time indicating that his and our descent can be traced back to the family of Greek Independence Leader,Markos Botsaris? Having read carefully the events of the Greek war of Independence,I noted the expulsion of thousands of Epirots from their homes in Epirus. Many fled to the Ionian islands and later descendants were dispersed over the years,to other countries in Europe and abroad. Our father frequently mentioned connections with Florina and dealings of ancestors with Ali Pasha, who was based in Ioannina. How much of this can be verified I do not know? Perhaps there is a Site on the Internet in Greece, that deals exclusively with search for Greek ancestors. I have investigated some sites which claim to do this, but are mostly aimed at those with British ancestry. Having made this expose,I must thank you for your valuable assistance, and I hope that we may communicate in the future on some basis of friendship. Please feel free to contact me on the Net at any time. Yours Sincerely Emmanuel Marcou.B.Pharm. E-Mail: emmanuel2aus@yahoo.com.au

Hello all I have just discovered this website and hope to learn much about Castellorizo. My husband's grandfather came to Australia nr 1917. His father was born in Darwin in 1919.. Mike comes from the Kafcaloudes (Kafcaloudis family). Grandfather, Soteres, was born in Castellorizo nr 1880. He married Papadaia Laros. They emigrated in 1917 with several children. They had more children when they lived in Darwin, in all 9 children. Later in life Soteres and Zafera moved to Brisbane, where they and a daughter Ellen are buried. Looking forward to reading lots more on your site and hearing stories of others from Castellorizo. Maybe even vising there one day. Congratulations on so much work Nicholas.

Hi Nicholas, just making an enquiry regarding Cassies who emigrated & remained in Brazil. Two of my Grandfathers" brothers travelled there before the second world war,and as I have noticed mention on your site,by fellow members,of their family menmbers who also travelled there,I wondered whether there is documentation existing with the Port Authorities, similar to that of New York. According to my father's youngest brother, who still lives, one of his uncles,ie,my grandfathers 'brothers was actually murdered by people smugglers, while trying to make his way to the United States. The other brother, remained in Sao Paolo, and my father received a couple of letters from him after World War Two, the last about 1948. I assume that his descendants still live in Sao Paolo and would be using the surname Marcou or Marcon or close variation. If any of our other members have contact with Cassies in Sao Paolo, their relatives may know of my relatives also. Sincerely Yours. Emmanuel Marcou.

Hi my name is Samantha Kootsookos, my paternal grandfather was Jack Kootsookos from Castelorizo... I think he left in the early 1900's for Far North Qld... the history is a bit sketchy... he married an aussie and they had a daughter & two sons: Christina, Anthony(Tony) & my dad - Victor... they've all passed on now....but it's interesting for me to see this website... I'm not aware of any Greek relatives although I'm sure I have many as I believe my grandfather had 6 sisters...if you think we may be related i'd love to hear from you...cheers sam

Sam,
From the record search I have quickly done with National Archives (www.naa.gov.au), it appears that there are at least three files on your grandfather, who is described as 'Jack Antoniou Kootsookos', in their holdings.
The first two are his alien registration files from the WWI period when all 'aliens' were required to go through a cumbersome registration process that monitored their movements in the Commonwealth. His first place of registration is recorded in the index as Paraparap in the Northern Territory.
The third file is his naturalisation file from around 1922.
You can order copies of these three files by visiting the website. They may be ordered in digital or hard copy format. They should provide you with a lot of new information about your grandfather's early days in Australia.
I'll also check to see if there are any records of your family in the dowry archive.

George,
Yes, it is - there are so many ways to transliterate Greek names into English that variations such as this one were inevitable.
What is clear here is that the variant 'Kootsookos' was used by this particular Castellorizian from the moment of his arrival, probably because the officer writing the name down on arrival thought such a spelling closest to what he heard. Alternatively, and depending on the travel document he was presented with (if any), the spelling could have its origins in its place of issue.
Perhaps Sam could tell us more when she accesses the files?
I will open a separate thread for Koutsoukos/Kootsookos to encourage others to contribute.
Nicholas

hi, i'm a new member and all i have time to write is that my late grandmother's name was Paraskevi Scorde (or Scordis) and was born to Despina Papapanaioti of Castallorizo who married Emanual Scordis of Simi. They came to Australia in about 1918 and i think Despina (My great grandmother) was born in 1889. I don't know any further back than this at this stage but would love to know if anyone else does! Thanks, Vanessa

Giorgos,
I am interested to hear more from you about the circumstances of your grandparents' departure from Castellorizo and their migration to Marseilles.
Do you know when precisely they departed the island? And the reasons for their travel? Did your grandfather travel first alone? What work did he do on his arrival in France?
I'd also like to know the names of your grandfather's siblings (brothers and sisters), if indeed you know them.
I look forward to hearing from you again and take this opportunity to thank you for your kind words about the Forum.

Hello Nick I need assistance to trace my paternal family line. My grandfather, Emanuel Economos married my grandmother, Eftihia Georgiadis in 1919. He is said to have been the first Greek Ambassador to Australia. I would like to know the best way to source information from official sources to find out more about their famlies prior to arriving in Australia, and after, and if that information is accurate. Eftihia was from Castellorizo and Emanuel 's family were originally from Kalymnos, then later Catellorizo (but I'm not certain). Joy McDonald
