Castellorizians in the United States

From 1892 to 1924, more than 22 million immigrants, passengers, and crew members came through Ellis Island and the Port of New York. The ship companies that transported these passengers kept detailed passenger lists, called "ship manifests." These records include Castellorizians seeking a better life in the United States. The list below details 159 individuals who nominated their address as Castellorizo. The list is incomplete because many ship manifests record just the country of Greece and not the locality for the passenger. Also others nominated Rhodes, Asia Minor, Turkey, Egypt, etc as their address even though they were of Castellorizian origin. Note the various inacurate spelling of Castellorizo and surnames. I have extracted passenger details by perusing locations that mention Castellorizo, or similar. Some of the single young men listed below were to return to Castellorizo but were to later bring their families to Australia instead.

This is a most useful collation of some of the early Castellorizian arrivals in the USA. Thank you for sharing your good work with us.

I have taken the liberty of adding in brackets and italics the more common version of the surname where that name has been so corrupted as to be almost unrecognisable. I have only done this where I am fairly certain of the correct surname in each such case.

Hi Cressie,
perused your list of passengers disembarking New York.
Savas Marcon would definitely have been our Grandfather who
went work in New York in 1910.Note difference in spelling of surname,but there can be no doubt.I still have a $10 Gold coin
which was given to me by Grandmother,with the U.S Eagle.
It was hard for me to know what spelling was used
for surname,as I did not have access to documents.So I assume
that when Grandfather went to work in France with family,he would have used the same Surname!!

Great work Allan! My grandfather was Emmanuel Spyro Halikis, who migrated to the USA in 1922 after time in Brazil (1913) and Australia (1916-1922). He later remigrated to Australia in 1947 with my mother, Mary (married to Con Bogiatzis), born in New Brighton, and son Spyro now in Perth (married to Mary Kailis). Emmanuel was joining his older brother Nick (aka Manettas). The Halikis family name was originally Zistis. While recognizing Anglophone spelling can be difficult, any chance of finding Halikis, Chalikis (?), Zistis in your research, or directions on how to interrogate the data set? many thanks, Nick

This is a useful website if you want to search a whole series of immigration databases using different criteria..

You can just search on the option for sounds like Castellorizo and it will find many entries.

If you search the double page layouts of the Ellis Island records you can find lots of information about relatives or friends and where they were in the USA ...

A warning that the double page layouts are not always sequential and you have to go back and forth a few pages sometimes to find all the parts of the entry. It is useful to make a note of the passenger number as the names do not appear on both pages.

So if anyone knows about the Palassis family in the United States, if you could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

I have been in contact over the years with a woman from Seattle WA USA who is a Palassis descendant. She is an actress and performs in plays etc. Her name is Angelique Neketas and if you contact me privately I can give you her email address or yours to her. She told me her real surname is Palassis and most of her male family members in US are Greek Orthodox Priests. There is (was) a Father Neketas S. Palassis in USA who I suspect is her father or grandfather as she now uses that Christian name as her surname.

At the time of correspondence I was supplying family history info to her on the AUS Palassis lines and was not seeking info from her on the US family. She is interested in her ancestry and I am sure she will share what she knows with you. She also mentioned that some of the Palassis family went to Brazil.

I did email her with details of this forum but am unsure if she subscribed or not.

Ok, I'm going to embarrass myself greatly here!

I've met two families with Kastellorizian roots in the United States and Canada.

The first was a Professor of business at one of the Florida State Universities.
The second was the owner of one of the larger Greek food importers in Toronto.

I'm going back twenty five years ago now so I will have to search my files which are currently in long-term storage. I'll get back to the forum when I have answers.

My grandmother Katina Kambouris married my grandfather Evangelos Antoniou. They are listed on the manifest as Christou and carried that name here in the states.
My grand father answered “tou Hristou” meaning Chris’ son when asked his name.
So, they are listed as Christou and took that name on although the lineage is Antoniou. My grandfather’s sister was Kyra Tis Ro, as she was an Antoniou.
