Hi ,
This family from Kastellorizo I do not know very much about at all as Evanghelia Dekaristou died in 1930 when her daughters were only 10 and 8 years old.
All I know is that Evanghelia's sister had two sons - one was Paul Kantilaftos who lived in Marseilles in France and the other was John Kantilaftos who came out to Australia.
Pavlos DEKARISTOS and Evdokia TALIANA had the following children:
i. Despina DEKARISTOU, born about 1886.
ii. Paraskevas DEKARISTOU was born about 1887.
iii. Evanghelia DEKARISTOU, born about 1888, Castellorizo, Greece; married Michalis PALDIRIS, about 1918, Castellorizo, Greece; Evanghelia died on 1 May 1930, Castellorizo, Greece.
The eldest daughter , Despina DEKARISTOU (Pavlos-1) was born about 1886 and married Kiriakos KANTILAFTOS (son of ?? )
Despina DEKARISTOU and Kiriakos KANTILAFTOS had the following children:
i. Yanni (John Kantilaftos) KANTILAFTOS. ii. Pavlos KANTILAFTOS was born. Married in Marseilles, France
Yanni (John Kantilaftos) KANTILAFTOS married Despina KARADONIS and had the following children:
i. Kiriakos KANTILAFTAS ii. Evdokia KANTILAFTOS iii. Katina KANTILAFTOS
John lived in Adelaide.
Anastasia Kantilaftis ( an aunt of John, sister to Kiriakos, owned the photo of the wedding in Castellorizo with Evanghelia Dekaristou and daughter Maria). Perhaps some of this family are in that photo.
Any clues or corrections welcome.
Many thanks Milli K

Milli,
I'm currently in Europe, but I should have some answers to your queries on this thread (and your other two threads) when I return to Sydney in 3 weeks.
Thanks for your patience.

Milli,
I can add a little to your current information on this one.
In 1923, Ioannis & Pavlos gave their house in the Ayios Nikolaos area and their land (in the Mandraki) to their aunt Evangelia by way of "repayment for her care and upbringing" of them and by virtue of the fact that they did not have a sister. Evangelia was living in the house at the time and I understand that she resided there with her husband Michalis until her death in 1930.
In 1936, Michalis sold the block of land in the Mandraki to the municipality.
This information is derived from a copy of a dilosis dated 29 January 1923 that I have in my possession, which appends two letters written by Pavlos from Marseilles in late 1922. There is an annotation from 1936 about the transfer of the land to the municipality.
Let me know if you would like any further details or if you would like to see copies of the documents.
Nicholas

Thank you for finding this information - this is most interesting. I would very much appreciate seeing a copy of the documents if that is possible. I'm sure the family will be very interested to learn more about the house and land. I think we had always thought it was rented rather than owned by any of the family.
Michalis had a small kafeneion I believe in the Mandraki area at some time... certainly during the earthquake in 1926, as that was when Eva remembers the church tower coming down and she received a cut on the head.
Michalis and Evanghelia also farmed from a little stone cottage on Avlonya - Evanghelia used to collect salt from the rocks on the other side of the island. I think they lived in the cottage for part of the year. I don't know whether the records mention what the arrangement was with that land.
Many thanks for taking the time to check this information . It is very much appreciated.
Thanks again... Milli K

Hi, My name is Despina Moschou, nee Kantilaftas, I am the granddaughter of John Kantilaftas who married Despina Kratsis (correction to information posted June 15 2007), in 1928 in Kastellorizo. My grandparents came to Australia and lived in Port Pirie where my father Jack (Kiriakos) was born in 1930, when he was three months old they moved to Adelaide.
I would appreciate any information about my grandfathers brother, Pavlos Kantilaftas, or his family who lived in Marseilles, France.
I look forward to a reply.

Hi Desi,
Yes, you are correct about the marriage of Ioannis Kyriakou Kadylaptis (I have taken the spelling directly from the dowry contract - do you have a copy?). His wife was indeed Despina Antoniou Kratsi and they married on the island in 1928.
I am sure millik will correct her post in due course...
If I locate any further information on Ioannis' brother, Pavlos (beyond what I have described above), I will let you know.
By the way, do you have a photo of your grandparents' wedding?

Great to hear from that branch of the family -
I will take any spelling amendments if you give me the correct names.
Mostly I am transcribing names as family members have given them to me over time. However many have been anglicised beyond recognition and changed considerably in the records in Australia.
Look forward to hearing more.. and happy to exchange whatever info I have that may be of interest.

I am interested in finding out as much as I can about my family, so any information you have would be appreciated. I wish I had paid more attention when my grandparents told stories about Kastellorizo .
Karadonis - mentioned on June 15 2007, was my great grandmothers maiden name before she married Antoni Kratsi. They had three children, Kosta, Stavro and Despina - (my grandmother who married Ioannis ).

Hello again..
Does that mean the Karadonis name is a generation out -
and do you know her first name?
Many thanks, Milli

I have also found a Pavlos Kandilaftis on Ancestry.com.au as crew on a ship Name: Pavlos Kandilaftis Age: 49 Birth Year: abt 1900 Port of Departure: Guaymas Ship: Rio Grande Port of Arrival: Kobe Arrival Date: 18 Nov 1949 Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Greek
Would this date be correct for the birth year.
It may explain why they were in Marseilles if they were sailors or crew... I think there is a reference somewhere to the tiles for the houses in Kastellorizo being stamped with "Marseilles" ?
Cheers, Milli

I think the name might be spelt as Candylaftis in Marseilles. There are numerous entries on Google for the search terms Candylaftis Marseilles.
Have fun. Milli

Great to hear from you.. this is fantastic..
I think my great grandmothers name was Katina Karadonis, but to be absolutely sure I will ask my dad or his sister, and I will also ask about Pavlos' birthdate.
Thanks again.. I'll be in touch..

Pavlos was born around 1902, his twin died at birth, my grandfather John was born 5/12/1900. My father remembers Pavlos coming to Australia in 1947, only for a few days and that was the last time he was in touch with the family.
By the way, previously you mentioned Evangelia Dekaristou's daughter Maria, would she happen to be Maria Zounis who lived in Perth??
