Looking for the maiden surname of the following 27 females (mainly Cazzie) who died in Western Australia between 1954 and 1980. In many instances I will already have their parents on my database but have not established the family link without knowing her surname. In some instances they married non Cazzies. Any assistance is appreciated. My private email is: cressie@bigpond.net.au

The Chrissie VEREVIS to whom you refer was my grandmother. She died on 8 February 1976 and her maiden name was MANIFIS. She was born in Myra [on 26 October 1890] and moved to Port Said Egypt to marry my grandfather George VEREVIS who, I understand, was part of the MANDALIS family. It is not entirely clear to me why the name changed for some family members from MANDALIS to VEREVIS. In any event, she had four sons and a daughter, the latter dying as a baby in Egypt. Three of the four sons migrated to Perth [in the late 1940s], the fourth [and oldest] Anastasios, stayed in Egypt for some years and then moved to Athens where he died in 1995. Of the three sons in Perth, Emmanual and Petro [my father] have also died. Emmanual died in 1998 [or 1999, can't remember exactly but can check this if you wish] and Petro died in 2001. Kyriako, the youngest, still lives in Perth with his wife Rose [Triantafilo] SPARTALIS. My father married Katina SIMONIDIES, my mother, who was born on Kastellorizo and still lives in Perth. I can provide much more detail if you wish however this may already be more than you require, Please let me know via this website.

Hi CV Sorry for the delayed reply, my wife has been in hospital for a major operation and I have been there every day since last week. Thanks for the info re your grandmother's maiden name. Much of the other info you supplied is already on the website at: www.ozgenealogy.info/genealogyI will compare it with what I already have and make any required adjustments or corrections. I had previously extracted the dates etc for your family from cemetery records, newspaper death and funeral notices and other available info in WA. Although you are not directly related to me, your late Uncle Simon's wife, Mim, was my mum's 1st cousin and a close friend (the same age). My grandmother was an Xanthis. Also I am connected by marriage twice with the Manifis family here in WA which I suspect links in with your grandmother. Perhaps you can advise further on that. Please do check out the website and let me know of any additional info, to my email address of: cressie@bigpond.net.au If you require full access for living people you will need to email me privately for a Userid and Password. Thanks again for your contact and the info you supplied, any additional info will be appreciated. Regards and best wishes............Allan (Agapitos) Cresswell

Allan Thank you for all this. Have had a quick look at the ozgenealogy site, looks terrific. I will look closer over the coming days and get back to you with more information. We may well be linked if not related - i'll mention this to my mum who has an excellent memory and knowledge of things/people Kastellorizo. Also, must ask, I went to school [Perth Modern, between 1969 and 1973] with an Allan Karasavas [cousin of Peter Panygeris who also went to Perth Mod] ... its not you is it??? Best wishes and perastika for your wife. Chrissie Verevis [previously of Perth and now living in Sydney].

Allan,
I've found four of the marriages in your list in the dowry archive. I have copied and pasted your list and added in bold the full maiden names as they appear in the relevant dowry contract:

Hi Nicholas Thanks for that information. It is great that you can identify the maiden names of these women. In most cases they are the mother's of those early first generation arrivals to Australia and often the current generations now do not know their name. In some instances you would even have the parents of those associated with the dowry. A wonderful resource that you are kindly sharing. Best wishes Allan PS Could I ask for the wedding dates for those four?

Depending on the age of your mother she may have heard of my Mum. Mum married an Aussie in 1942 during WW2 and caused quite a stir in Lake Street. Her story is at: www.ozgenealogy.info/genealogy/histories/cassie1.htmIt is a bit long winded (15 chapters) but includes details of much of the problems associated with the marriage taking place, especially the prejudices from my father's parents. That is discussed at both: www.ozgenealogy.info/genealogy/histories/cassie8.htmand the next chapter. My wife came out of hospital yesterday and thank you for your comments, she is making great progress. I look forward to any additional information you can provide on your family. Best wishes Allan

Allan, In my family's genealogy we find a Eleni Panayotis Spartalis (born: 1887; deceased: 1977, Perth-Australia). She was the daughter of Panayiotis Spartalis and Polixeni Salipa. Eleni married Nicholas Spartalis (they had the same last name) and had 5 children: Haralambos, Michael, Marigo, Stavroula and Polixeni. I wonder if this is the same person...

Hi 'Spartalis'
Yes this is the same person. The problem arose in that when she died in 1977 someone provided her father's name as Haralambos for the death certificate, with the mother's name correct as Polexeni. Obvious from what you advise the informant mistakingly gave the husband's fathers name by mistake. Thanks for clearing that up.
BTW do you know who the daughter Stavroula married? I have Michael but nothing further.
Best wishes Allan

Hello, Allan. Thanks for the death information on Aikaterini Koutsoukou. I appreciate it. Now, as far as Eleni Panayioti Spartalis's daughter Stavroula. She married Michael Vdelli in 1928 in Castellorizo, Greece. Right after the marriage they moved to Australia where they lived the rest of their lives. I don't have the death date on them, but I know Michael died fairly young due to heart problems and Stavroula lived a long life and died not long ago in Australia (wonder if you'd have any info on that). The couple had only one son Basil Vdelli who lives in Australia.

Hi "Spartalis"
Michele Bassili Vdelli died 27 Oct 1974 at Balcatta WA (last residence) aged 69 years. Stavroula died 17 Nov 2007 at Embleton WA (last residence) aged 100 years!
Both are buried at Karrakatta Cemetery - Greek Orthodox CA 0325. I have been extracting newspaper Greek death/funeral notices since 1983 but missed them due to the surname spelling. Next time I am at the State Library I will look up the death notices for them both which will reveal additional family info. I was at the library yesterday but should go again within a week.
Hope this helps Allan

Mihail Vasileiou Avdelides (as his name is recorded in his wedding contract) married Stavroula Nikolaou Spartali on 19 February 1928.
The groom is described as a carpenter by trade. The gift of 100 English pounds was to be paid to the groom when the bride's two younger brothers, Mihail & Haralambos, reached their majority. One of the two witnesses to the contract is the bride's uncle, Mihail Stavrou Spartalis.

Nicholas, Thank you so much for the precious information. You've mentioned Stavroula's uncle Mihail Stavrou Spartalis as a witness in the contract - which was exciting because I know hardly anything on him, except he died very young. Wonder if you or anyone knows any more on him. Wonder if he got married at all or if anyone knows his death date. Thanks so much!

You say that your grandfather's name was Georges VEREVIS. He was the brother of Christina VEREVIS, the mother of my grandmother Rose VEREVIS which is partly in France in 1919. What was the relationship between the family MANDALIS and the VEREVIS family? Do you have information about the life in Kastellorizo in the years 1910-1920? Thanks in advance, J.P MARTIN

For detailed information about life on Castellorizo in its heyday, I would recommend An Island in Time by Nicholas Pappas and Nicholas Bogiatzis. Here are the details about ordering your copy - it has just been reissued in softback format.

my name isGeorge Mandalis. I am the son of Kosta Mandalis who was the son of George Mandalis who was my grandfather.
My father was born in Cairo Egypt in 1940 and migrated to Melbourne in 1958.
As far as I have read in the Mandalis history we were also related to Lazarus Mandalis who was 1 of the first Greeks to migrate to Australia. Would love to hear more of what you have found
