Hi Bill
I wonder if you tie into my Aunty Angela Karasavas (nee Theodorou) family of Sydney. Aunty Angela is 83 yrs old and was married to my Uncle Spiro (my Mum's brother). She is the last of that generation of my Cazzie family. Her mother was Katherine Theodorou (nee Alexiou) born Castellorizo in 1884 and died Sydney in 1954. I suspect there may be a connection with your family?
Best wishes Allan Perth WA

Allan,
I'm sure that there are others who know more, but I can add the following information:
Aikaterini (Katina) Yeorgiou Alexiou (also known as Tsopani) married Yeorgios Hatzitheodorou Hatzistatoglou (now known as Theodore) on 15 April 1911.
They had at least 6 children. I believe (though I stand to be corrected) that the youngest child was your aunt Angela. Katina's brother was Vasilios Alexiou, who married Panagiota Christofi Liondi on 4 October 1925. This is where your connection with Bill stems from.
The Alexiou/Tsopani family has an interesting history. Katina's father, Yeorgios (he was nicknamed 'o Tsopanis') was one of at least 7 children. The eldest, Alexios, drowned while fishing. Another son, Ioannis (nicknamed 'o Hochlastos') owned the leasehold over a lake near Myra in Turkey which he exploited profitably for fishing. His descendants are in Victoria. A younger son, Stamatis, was a priest on the island and took on the name 'Simeon'. He married Alexandra Grigoriou and they had 2 children. He died in 1929 and is buried in the monastery of Aghia Triadha on the island. His descendants (the Symons & Diamandis families) are predominantly in Victoria and Queensland.
There were also two at least 2 daughters (Despina & Dionysia) and another son, Savvas, who also drowned.
If anyone requires more information, they should not hesitate to contact me.
Nicholas

Hi Nick, you are spot on, my grandparents were Vasilios and Panagiota Alexiou, which if I am not wrong is Bill and Patricia, in English. The same names that my wife and I share. I had the privalege of visiting the Alexiou house in Kazi last week. For those that visit the island it is the 5 sided , 3 storey home on the hill, over looking the "limani". The house has been beautifully restored by a wealthy Italian family.

Xenia (Tsopani) Alexiou was sister to Aikaterini. Xenia married Philipi Georgouras. She was born around 1890 and died in 1964. She also had a brother, Diamanti, whose daughter, Lina lives on Kastellorizo.

Hi I am trying to sort some of the early Cazzie people into SA and hope someone can assist with a few queries on the Alexiou family. An Alexandra Alexiou married in SA to a Christos Constantakis in 1937. She was born c1915 and her father is nominated as George Alexiou. Another marriage in SA in 1930 is for a Diamantis Alexiou born c1900 whose father is also nominated as George. He married Maria Vasilios Tripolemos. This marriage resulted in a daughter, Evangelia being born in Adelaide, who married Savvas Mavrothalassitis in 1958 in Melbourne. Diamantis and Evangelia fits well as the persons mentioned by Joy but Alexandra (born 1915) seems to be outside the time frame of having the same George as a father, with Diamantis born 1900 and Aikaterini born 1884. So the question is - who is the George Alexiou who is nominated as Alexandra's father? A second George or a second marriage and second series of children? Another question relates to an Anastasia Alexiou who married in Port Pirie in 1918 to Dimitrios Contoulis. Anastasia is nominated as being born in 1897 and her father being Johnanou Alexiou. Could this be the Ioannis whose descendants are in Victoria (as advised by Nicholas)? These are the only three Alexiou marriages in SA to 1937. Any assistance to clarify or add to the Alexiou family structure would be appreciated. The Alexiou surname is widespread and would include some non Cazzie families throughout the world, but these early SA families seem to be of Cazzie origin. Allan www.castellorizo.org

Further..Diamanti Alexiou married Evdokia Tripolemo. Their children were George, Leo, Costa, Evangelia (the Lina in Castellorizo I mentioned earlier), Evdokia and Chrysanthe. Bill Alexiou married Pannaiota; their children were George (m. Helen Lazos), Christopher (m. Aust. unknown) who had a twin d. at birth, and lastly Constantine (d. aged 21 c. 1958, m. to Mary Diamond). I cannot help with the next generation. Xenia Alexiou married Phillip Georgouras, their offspring were George, Haralampo, Alexis. Antonis, Irini, and Chrysanthe. I can fill in the next generations here. Going back to Stamatis- he had a wife called Alexandra.

Hello Cressie...Reading your May 07 entry. There is another Alexandra. The daughter of Stamati Alexiou (later known as the ordained Papa Simeon) who was George Alexiou's brother (ie.the George married to Evangelia Nikoglou). Stamati married Alexandra, and they had a daughter Katerinia who married Yiannis Diamantis. They had 8 (possibly 9) children. Their names areChrysanthe eldest, Diamanti, Costa, Simeon, Nikolas, Spiros, Georgos (aka Gallos after a Frenchman who was his godfather during the Fr. occupation) and finally ALEXANDRA who was about 3 years of age in 1926. Could she be the connection you are seeking? Joy M

Hi Joy
Thanks for all the feedback on the Alexiou family. On the last post you have Anastasia as a daughter marrying Kyriakos. I might be wrong but I think it was Kyriakos the son of Katerina Theodorou (nee Alexiou) marrying Anastasia Delivorias in NSW.
Best wishes Allan

Hi Cressie Yes, re Kiriakos, you are correct. Apologies for my erroneous info. Also, I contacted Evangelia on Kazie (ie daughter of Diamanti m. to Evdokia Tripolemo). She advised more information possibly may be obtained from a Savvas Karras who lives in Piraeus. No address was given, sorry, but it might expand things a bit. Let me know how you get on... Joy

Read more: castellorizo.proboards.com/thread/24/alexiou#ixzz5GIhLGTw8I see some time has past since you asked this question, however I am Anastasia Alexiou great granddaughter. From what i have been told she married dimitrious contoulis in port pirie (he then passed away 1919 of flu www.myheritage.com/research/record-1-114406631-1-26/dimitri-kontoulas-in-myheritage-family-trees ). He and anastasia had one daughter Dimi. Anastasia then re-married my great grandfather Apostolos Alexander (https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-1-114406631-1-9/anastasia-alexander-born-alexiou-in-myheritage-family-trees). and continued on to have 4 more daughters and two sons that lived until adulthood. My grandmother basillia Kotaras is still living in port pirie today.
