Hello, I am French and I am in the search of information on my family originating in Kastellorizo. My name is MOUGLALIS. My grandfather deceased after my birth, nobody knows anything of our ancètres. Our name has it a particular significance? Thank you for your site. It is a little my family history which I manage to imagine. His name was COSTAS MOUGLALIS IN 1913 - 1914 at CASTELORIZO. DOES SOMEBODY KNOW OF THEM? THANK YOU

Dear Fred,
The Mouglalis family (also spelt and pronounced 'Moulalis') originates from Mugla in Anatolia (modern Turkey). They settled on Castellorizo in the middle of the nineteenth century, but most retained commercial and familial connections with their home town until the compulsory exchange of populations after 1922 when contact between the island and the mainland all but ceased.
The Mouglalis brothers migrated to France during the First World War (when the island was under French occupation) and some settled in Nantes. A branch of their descendants ultimately settled in Australia after the Second World War and there is a large presence in Sydney.
I should be able to trace specific information about your grandfather from my archive. I will let you know in coming days.
Nicholas

Fred,
I have located the dowry contract of your great grandparents Alexandros (Alexandre) and Chrisafina.
It is dated 16 January 1906 and written in the Greek language. Your great grandfather is described as 'Alexandros Nikolaou Emmanuel Mouglalis' while your great grandmother ('Chrisafina K Kazagli') is represented by her brother Paraskevas.
The purpose of the dowry contract was to record the date and place of the proposed marriage and to list the gifts to be given by way of dowry by the bride's side. In this case, there is a reference to a house on Castellorizo, another plot of land on the island and 50 eikosafranga which were 20 franc gold coins "counted into the hands of the groom".
The document says that the wedding was to take place in Kalamaki before the Apokries festival which is the last date on which meat may be eaten before Easter fasting. So the wedding must have occurred sometime between February and May 1906 in Kalamaki.
I would be happy to send you a copy if you want to see it. Please let me know.
Nicholas

I notice the Mouglalis posting has a reference to a 'Choussafina Kazagli'.
My maternal grandfather was Antonios Samiotis.
I have his parents as Georgios Angethithis-Zorgrafou (I stand corrected, but I have mention in my notes that his people came from Samos, and therefore they were called Samiotis.)
Georgios's wife was Chrissie Hatzagapitou- Kazagli.
Have I found a missing link somewhere?
This is why this forum is invaluable!!!!!
Appreciate any feedback.

Evdokia, I do not know what is the relationship between Chrysafena KAZAGLI and Chrissie Hatzagapitou- Kazagli. Maybe Nicholas false in there more. The 4th Mouglalis brother arrived in France in years? 1920? Georges would MOUGLALIS, married to Marina NIKANDROS. So much for the latest information in my possession.

Fred, With the permission of Cressie, I am posting here a copy of his recent e-mail to you for the benefit of others interested in the Mouglalis family: Greetings again Fred in France
I hope this email finds you well and that you are able to read this email. Your English is far better than my French!
I summarise what I have from various people and sources about your family supplied by you, Nicholas Pappas (of NSW), Eveline Mouglalis (of NSW), Michel Mouglalis (of QLD) and Nicholas Malaxos (of NSW).
I attach an obituary for Nicholas Mouglalis of Perth Western Australia. He was the son of Mihalis Nicolas Mouglalis and Olga Pipazari, both of Castellorizo. As the obituary tells Olga died as a young wife and Mihalis joined his brothers in France and remarried, leaving his son, Nicholas in Castellorizo. I know nothing further re Mihalis and his new family in France.
One of the elder brothers of Mihalis, Emmanuel Nicolas Mouglalis, later migrated to Australia with his wife (Evangelia Malaxos) and family and there are many descendants in Australia from this family (information from Eveline and Michel). A photo taken in France of this family is at: www.castellorizo.org/showmedia.php?mediaID=531&medialinkID=742 This was supplied to me by Nicholas Malaxos.
From the initial information I have of your family (supplied by you and Nicholas Pappas) your great grandfather, Alexandros Nikolaou Emmanuel Mouglalis married Chrisafina Kazagli. He would be a brother to Mihalis and Emmanuel mentioned above. You have posted a photograph of that family on the CastellorizoHistory website and from that photo I guess that Sophie, Marie, Constantine and Michel are the children of Alexandros and Chrisafina. The Emile Theologos and his children in the photo would be the family of either Sophie or Marie. Could you tell me who is the wife?
Also you advise that your grandfather is Kostas Mouglalis. Is he the Constantine (for Costas?) in the photo? This photo is at: castellorizo.proboards59.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1190369168
There is a fourth brother of Mihalis, Emmanuel and Alexandros but I do not know who he is or anything on his family. Perhaps you or Nicholas Pappas know who he is?
I look forward to your email and what information you have on your family. Who were the children of Costas?
I have sent this email to others in Australia who are associated with the Mouglalis family.
Best wishes Allan (Agapitos) Cresswell Western Australia

Here is the response I made to A. Cresswell
Dear Allan,
Here are the answers to the questions in your email 28/10/07
Alexandros Nikolaou Emmanuel Mouglalis married Chrisafina Kazagli are my great grandparents.
Sophie, Mary, Constant (Kostas) and Michel are children of Alexandros and Chrisafina.
Emile THEOLOGOS is married to Mary MOUGLALIS.
Constant (French translation of Kostas) is my grandfather and Kostas of the photo.
If my deduction is right there would be 4 brothers of which 2 would have migrated to Australia (Emmanuel and Mihailis) and the two others would have remained in France, one in Nantes George born in 1885, and the other in Marseilles, Alexandros Nikolaou Emmanuel Mouglalis.
But I cannot confirm for Georges because I do not have any document.
I think N. Pappas surely knows more than me!
Regarding children Kostas (my father) there are 4 brothers:
Nicholas Alexander MOUGLALIS born in Marseilles in 1942 (my father) Christian MOUGLALIS born in Marseilles in 1944 Albert MOUGLALIS and Jean-claude MOUGLALIS (twins) born in Marseilles in 1950
Thanks again for the interest you have in our family.

Dear Nicholas, I posed my question a little. I remember vaguely have heard that mouglalis men arrived in France in submarines! And women walk!? What do you think about this? It seems to me odd indeed they arrived in Nantes (open Atlantic ocean), for example, while Marseille was already a large port on the Mediterranean, and thus closer to Kastellorizo! Do you know what date they arrived? And how? And women?
You talk about 5 brothers in one of your previous post. Do you know his name? For me there is Emmanuel, Alexandre, Mihalis and Georges. Thanks Frederique.

Not knowing anything about the history of my family, I seek information on immigration in France from my great grandfather:
Alexandros Nikolaou Mouglalis Emmanuel and his wife KAZAGLI Crysafena (5 children born in 1909 in Kalamaki Mouglalis Sophie, Marie 1910 Mouglalis, 1912 Mouglalis Nicolas, 1913 Mouglalis Kostas and 191? Michel Mouglalis)
and 3 other brothers Mouglalis (Emmanuel, Mihail and George and their wives, Evangelia Malaxos, PIPAZARI Olga NIKANDROS and Marina and their children).
When they are gone? How are they gone? Why are they gone? What were their occupations, their lives? Kastellorizo they had lived, or elsewhere in Kalamaki?
person in my family now living knows much ...
Any information you can give me will be invaluable and I thank you.

I should like to make a contribute on this forum showing an article about the emerging French beautiful and clever actress Anne Mouglalis, of Castellorizian origins, published today on the Italian magazine D La Repubblica delle Donne, of which please find a link herebelow: dweb.repubblica.it/dweb/2005/07/30/attualita/attualita/032ann46132.htmlFor those who are able to understand Italian language, please find herebelow full text of this interesting arcticle: ++ INTERVISTA Anna Mouglalis seduzione pericolosa In Grazie per la cioccolata di Chabrol teneva testa, giovanissima, a Isabelle Huppert. Ho lavorato come assistente. A Chabrol è piaciuto proprio quello.
