Hi All
My grandmother was born Castellorizo on Sep 7 1887 and died Perth WA in 1957. She migrated to Perth WA with her husband, Agapitos Karasavas, and their children in 1928. Her parents were Zafiris Xanthis and Maria (nee Komninos). She had an older half brother, George Xanthis (his mother was Rose Fermanis). George also died in Perth but his descendants now live in Piraeus Greece. An elder sister, Xanthi, married Kyriakos Makriargirou but she died in childbirth at Castellorizo. Another brother, Agapitos Xanthis, was on the Emergency Committee of 1913 at Castellorizo and family info passed down suggest he may have been Lord Mayor of Castellorizo at some stage. He married Eleni Pitsikas and their descendants live in Rhodes.
Another sister, Anastasia, died a few months before my grandmother was born so she also was named Anastasia. The youngest in the family was Komninos Xanthis who migrated to Perth with his young wife, Elefantiani (nee Kailis) and whose many descendants live in Perth.
My grandmother had an Uncle, Nicholas Xanthis, who married Despina Gazaglis and his children's descendants are spead over Australia, mainly Queensland, NSW and WA. Nicholas and Despina had six children who married mainly Cazzies. Spouses had the surnames Theodorou, Kannis, Taifalos, Tsakalos, Lazos and Tattis.
My grandmother had an Aunty, Caterina Xanthis, who married Michael Lazarakis and whose descendants live in Perth WA.
My mother spoke often about her Xanthis rellies and said her grandfather, Zafiris, had a business on Antifelo Asia Minor. His wife insisted that she return to Castellorizo prior to the birth of each of her children.
Nicholas mentions the Xanthis family in his book "Castellorizo" and makes mention also to an Evangelos Xanthis which the family has never discussed previously. Also in recent times, Malcolm I'Anson of Hong Kong (and this Forum), makes mention of an Emmanuel Xanthis of Castellorizo and his son, George, who he is related to. Both Evangelos and Emmanuel must tie into the family somehow as the name is not common on the island.
Nicholas Pappas has supplied me the dowry contacts for my grandmother and his brother, Agapitos, which were just great. Perhaps Nicholas you may be able to help further as I am chasing details on a Dowry Contract (Dec 1914?) for the proposed marriage of Emmanuel V Xanthis to Chrissafina Photios. Specifically I am looking as to who represented Emmanuel on the contract.
Also my grandmother's half brother, George (Yioryios) Xanthis, married a Constandinia Hatzilea pre 1920 (first child born Castellorizo in 1920) and his dowry contract may exist which could also help to link Emmanuel and Evangelos to George, Agapitos and Anastasia. Also any other marriages involving an Xanthis that may clarify how/if these other Xanthis persons tie into mine. Your assistance would be appreciated.
If anyone on this forum has a link to the families mentioned above I would appreciate feedback and exchange of info.
