Hi All
I´m from Brazil.
My grandfather Charalambos Comninos (1898-1971) was born in Kastellorizo and came to Brazil in 1915 (+/-).
He had two brothers: Comninos Michael Comninos and Gabriel Michael Comninos, both went to Australia.
His parents were Michael Comninos and Catharina Comninos.
Does someone know where they died?
Any additional information about the Comninos family would be appreciated.
Just for the record, in Florianopolis (Santa Catarina-Brazil) there´s a strong Greek community of Kastellorizian origin.
The first members came with Captain Savvas Nicolau Savvas, whose descendants still live there.
Best regards,
Francisco Comninos

Hi Francisco
Great to hear from you, both on this site and the private email you sent to me re your Comninos family. I reply here because it may be of interest to others one day.
You may be aware that two of Michael's sons, Comninos and Gabriel, who you mention above lived in Perth Western Australia and their families still do. Your grandfather's sister, Maria, also came to Perth but she may have never married. I have not had a close look at the Comninos family here in Perth but now you have made the contact I will look at other resources available to me. I have been told that another sister of your grandfather, Eleni, married a Palassis and was living somwhere in Greece in 1982.
Your great grandmother, Caterina, died here in Perth on 14 Mar 1949 and is buried at Karrakatta Cemetery. If you would like I can photograph the headstone on my next visit. Records on her death nominate that she would have been born in 1865.
There is a chap I know here in Perth who surname is Comninos and he is called a nickname of "Brazil" as he comes from there. I don't know his real christian name or his parentage. I must ask him next time I see him. You may know of him as I suspect he would be a cousin of yours.
Could you let me know the maiden surname of your grandmother, is it Brando or another name?
My great grandmother, Maria Komninos born c 1855 in Castellorizo, may also link to your family but will discuss this another time.
Best wishes Allan

Hi Allan,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I knew that Gabriel and Comninos lived in Perth. Both visited my family, here in São Paulo, when I was little.
I told my aunt (Catharina) about Maria and Eleni. She knew Maria was living in Perth, but the information about Eleni is entirely new.
There´s been a story circulating here, that my grandfather had a sister that became a Nun. Could be Maria?
Concerning my great grandmother, Caterina, thank you for telling me her resting place.
It would be very nice to have a picture of the headstone, thank you.
Do you know if his husband (Michael) also died in Perth?
I asked my relatives about that Comninos you mentioned, but no one knows about him.
I was told that a son of Evangelia (my grandfather cousin) moved to Australia many years ago.
As you asked, yes, my grandmother maiden surname is Brando.
I´m curious about your great grandmother, Maria Komninos and her connection to my family!
Best regards,
Francisco

Hi again Francisco
Thanks for your reply and the great photos of your family you sent privately. Will post to website soon.
Going today to photograph Comninos graves and also a look through the old death/funeral notices for your family here in Perth.
Your great grandfather is not buried in our main cemetery and I suspect like many of the early arrivals to Australia the mother came out as a widow.
Did you know that your Great Uncle Comninos Comninos's wife, Zoi, was the maternal granddaughter of Chrysafina Komninos? Chrysafina's brother, Agapitos Komninos, was my G G Grandfather. The marriage of Comnonos and Zoi suggests that your Comninos family and my Komninos family are likely to connect.
My 3x Great grandfather, Doulos Komninos, was reputed to have been 110 years when he died. His third wife was 16 years old and he was about 65 years when he married. First marriage one child and wife died in childbirth. Second wife had 5 daughters and 1 son. Third wife had 5 sons and 3 daughters. Total of 15 children. At the opening of the Suez Canal Doulos went to the opening proudly dressed up in a 'Westerners' suit. To establish a link I need to know the eldest son of your G Grandfather, Michael Comninos. From info you have supplied it seems that it was Charalambos but there may have been an earlier son who did not go to Australia or Brazil. Your Aunt may know.
Perhaps we should take this thread offline (private emails) when we both come back with additional info. I will keep you informed.
Best wishes to my almost cousins in Brazil.
Allan

Hi Francesco and Allan
I have a photograph of Eleni Comninos who married Hatzisavva Kiosoglou and she had two children, that I am aware. Maria and George. George married Polixeny Hatzikiriki (or Yamali) and they had Christina, Eleni, Savva, Evdokia, Vasilis and Maria. I would also like to find out more about the Comninos family. I understand that the late Michael Comninos (Athens) had a detailed family tree, but I was not able to track it down when I was in Athens recently. Regards Nick Malaxos

Hi Nicholas,
I think that the Eleni Comninos you mentioned and the daughter of Michael Comninos are different persons.
Our Eleni Comninos was married to Nicholas George Palassis and died in Greece (2002).
Being so, her husband couldn’t be Hatzisavva Kiosoglou.
I don’t have any information about my Great grandfather in Athens.
Please, let me know what to you want to find out about my family.
Best regards,
Francisco

Hi Francisco
sorry I know I'm 9 years late since the last message. But I was very curious about our family name Komninos. We are in Australia.
