In holy memory of our respected father Nikolaos Em. Payias by the love of his children 1845-1917 In the slicing of Suez He was a leader And an excellent interpreter, For forty continuous years He laboured in its waters And he emerged victorious A grey-haired pensioner With a generous allowance And in his sweet homeland He befell his fate This is the inscription of my great great grandfathers headstone. I have visited the cemetry " thanks to you Nick Pappas for your encouragement" All that I know of him is that he worked on the suez canal as it says on his headstone, he was originally from Port Said- Egypt as the story goes. He was married to a " Katina ? " does anyone know who? Katina is a name that has been passed down through the family as my mum is a Katina and so is some of her distant cousins. If anyone knows anything about my family it would be greatly appreciated. I have consulted family elders but they only know what has been passed down to them by there parents etc-- not much.

nicholas,
I can add only a little more...
When Nikolaos married his daughter Maria to your great grandfather, Vasilios N Zoumbatlis, on 19 April 1909, among the gifts he gave to the groom was a plot of land in Antifilo (in Asia Minor, modern Kas) which adjoined a perivoli (garden) he also owned. He also handed over considerable jewellery in the so-called 'European style', a sign perhaps of his exposure to foreign markets through his work in Suez.
I hope others have even more to add...
Nicholas
