I am tracing the family of Peter Kafcaloudis ( Paraskevas Kafcaloudis) and his wife Chrisafena Kotzas from Kastellorizo to Australia - these are the details I have to date, along with some other references to the Kafcaloudis name with spelling variations that have turned up in my research. I have quoted all spelling as it appears in the records in Australia.
Paraskevas Kafcaloudis was the son of George Kafcaloudis and Despina Nickolaris...
George KAFCALOUDIS and Despina NICKOLARIS had the following children:
Paraskevas (Peter Kafcaloudis) KAFCALOUDIS, born on 6 Dec 1876, Castellorizo, Greece; married Chrisafina KOTZAS, about 1909, Castellorizo, Greece; died on 10 Aug 1951, Malvern Cafe, Leichhardt St, Spring Hill, Brisbane, Qld, Australia .
Nikolas KAFCALOUDIS was born about 1876. Lived Ismailia, Egypt
Vassilis KAFCALOUDIS was born about 1877. Lived Port Said, Egypt, next door to his sister Evanghelia and her daughter.
Magdelena (Cocona) KAFCALOUDIS, born about 1878, Castellorizo, Greece.
Evanghelia KAFCALOUDIS was born about 1879. Lived Port Said, Egypt, with her daughter, and next to Vassilis Kafcaloudis, her brother.
Soteres KAFCALOUDIS, born on 10 Nov 1882, Castellorizo, Greece; married Papadia (Zafero Kafcaloudis) LAROS, about 1908, Castellorizo, Greece; died on 15 Jul 1955, Brisbane, Qld, Australia.
Chrisafina KOTZAS was a daughter of George KOTZAS and Maria THEMISTOKLIS and was born about 1890 in Castellorizo, Greece. She died on 9 or 10 Apr 1954 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
1914 EMIGRATION of Peter Kafcaloudis from Kastellorizo to Fremantle, Western Australia.
There is a record of a KAFCALOUPIS Panaskenas Mr , arriving on 10 April 1914 on the "Valdieri" from Port Said to Fremantle ( Western Australian Passenger Records CD)
On the same ship is a Mr T KAFKALOUKIS, Nationality Greek. ( I wonder who this person might be?)
In 1923, a Mrs Katarina KAFKALOUTI, aged 50 years, arrived in Fremantle - nationality Egyptian -
travelled on the ship "Dumbea" from Port Said to Fremantle.
( I am wondering whether this is any link to this person -
According to his naturalization papers, Peter remained in Fremantle for 9 months - probably from April 1914 until about January 1915.
He then travelled to Port Darwin and remained there for 5 years and 2 months ( excluding the time taken for him to travel back to Castellorizo to collect his family in 1917
1915 Darwin - Peter Kafcaloudis finds work on the railway ...
"In 1915, work began on the railway extension from Pine Creek to Emunaglen.
By 1915, there were a few dozen Greeks here (in Darwin) . By early 1916, there were a few hundred, and by 1917 there may have been as many as a thousand.
The railway extension was finished in 1917, and soon there was terrible unemployment. Men left Darwin whenever they could, and from 1920 a subsidy was paid to encourage ' polyglots' like the Greeks to leave.
By 1921, there were only 67 Greek adults left in Darwin."
( NOTES from NT News, 12 June 2001)
1920 - Peter Kafcaloudis and family leave Darwin for Innisfail
PETER KAFCALOUDIS and family sailed on the ST ALBANs from Darwin to Cairns ( or southern ports) about 21 February 1920 ( note from Northern Territory Passenger Lists, Jan 1919 to December 1920)
The entry in the Port Darwin Shipping Index for 1920 shows Peter and Chrisafina sailing for Cairns with 4 children: George, Despina, Maria and Helen. The name of the vessel was "H Wah Ping 12".
1920 - Kafcaloudis family in Innisfail, Queensland
According to his naturalization papers, Peter Kafcaloudis was in Innisfail for two years - we think the family lived in Edith Street or Lily Street.
In a chapter on the history of the Greek Community written by S. Taifalos,
" the number of Greek farms was also increasing. By the end of the 1920s, farms were owned by Bacalakis Bros, Hercules Spanos, Finitsis, Bros, Paul Kafkaloudis, Taifalos Bros, Sam Merciades and Hondros Brothers."
The entry for Paul Kafkaloudis probably refers to Peter Kafcaloudis.
Peter Kafcaloudis farmed sugar cane in the Mena Creek area, near Innisfail, with his sons, George, Con and Nick.
I would be interested to find any information about this family, especially when they went to live in Egypt, and how many of the family came to Australia. At this stage, I know Paraskevas ( the eldest son) and Soteres ( the youngest son) emigrated and some children of their siblings also came out.
I also believe that the wives of the two brothers were related somehow - Chrisafena Kotzas and Papadia Laros.
Many thanks for any help.
