Hi All AUS DEATH INDEXES A great research resource available in some States in Australia to identify Castellorizian ancestors is the Death Indexes. In Victoria they are available to 1985 and provide by far the best info for any State. The father's name together with mother's MAIDEN name is shown, along with death place, age of the deceased and registration number (to obtain a death certificate). Victoria also has the Inquest Index available to 1985 (for Sudden Deaths) which supplies additional info. In NSW they are available to 1945 and provide the father's christian names and mother's christian names (if known) along with year of death, location and registration number. In WA the Death Indexes show parents first names between the years 1954 to 1980 along with District and registration number. These indexes are particulary useful where you have an ancestor such as a grandparent or great grand parent who died some years ago and the present generation does not know the parents of the deceased. If for instance a great grandmother died back in 1939 the informant at the time would almost certainly have supplied the parents names of the deceased even though they may never have come to Australia, and are unknown to the current generations. I have all these indexes and if some of your ancestors were arrivals some years ago to Australia I may be able to assist. Let me know the surname and the State and I can supply what is available. Marriage and Birth Indexes are another resource but not to the same extent as the death indexes to link back to an earlier generation. Can discuss these at another time. I can reply to the first few queries on this forum to give others an idea of the results available, but it will be best taken off forum if there are numerous requests received. Hope this can assist you. Allan (Agapitos) Cresswell

Hi Emmanuel
I only have SA Death Indexes to 1915 which is pre most Cazzie arrivals to that State. Recently SA brought out the Death Index CD for 1916 to 1972 which I don't yet have. If I had an interest in that State I would have brought it already but the cost of $220 puts it low in my must have list. However I have geni contacts who would have it although I do not know what info it supplies. If she could have died 1972 or prior I can make some inquiries, but if it is late 70's as you state then would be a waste even inquiring.
Another avenue in SA is the marriage indexes which go to 1937. If Evangelia married in SA pre 1938 then I can assist. The index gives the Bride and Grooms names, place of marriage, full date of marriage, father's name for Bride and Groom (but nothing for the mother) and the registration number.
Let me know if a marriage may have occurred in SA or other States and I can try a lookup from that avenue. WA marriages to 1942, VIC to 1942, NSW to 1945, SA to 1937 and other States are too early to worry about.
Also looking forward to any additional aditional info for your Cazzie ancestors. You may be aware that I have already put up some info on your family on the website. I am getting over a 100 hits a day on the site, mainly from Greece and USA.
Best wishes Allan

Dear Allan, thanks for your E-Mail & interestingly I noticed one or two anomalies in family surnames in my Family. My paternal Grandmother, always called herself Evangelia Sava,on her Death Certificate her maiden name is listed as Tsilis. However this again is incorrect,as I am reliably informed, her maiden name was in fact,Evangelia Constantinou and Husband was Savas Marcou. It is also a fact that in 1950,our family surname, Marcou, was the only one listed in the white pages of the telephone directory for Melbourne. In answer to your enquiry regarding photo's i have sent to you,I agree to have them included in your Site. It's strange you know, when we were children,Grandma spoke Greek with a strong Cassie vernacular, and my maternal Grandma spoke with a strong Mytilinian accent. As a result,we children were at a loss when it came to learning to speak correctly in Greek. It was only as an adult that I applied myself to learning Greek Demotiki and to read & write same:so now I can say that I am reasonably fluent in all aspects, and watch the Greek programs with my wife,(who by the way)was born in Constantinople and arrived here in 1950. To my Cassie Aunts she was still considered a Xeni!!
Thank you sincerely & hope to hear from you again. Emmanuel Marcou.

::)Dear Allen, I am looking into the Kyzalas family because Constantina M Kyzalas is listed as my birth mother, I was adopted in1956 by a Greek American Family from the USA, can you help me in my search to find my birth Mother and her family, the following is what I was able to retrieve from Nicholas Pappas:
Mihail Stavrianou Kyzalas married Palassa Antoniou Maltezou on Castellorizo on 5 February 1922. Their original dowry contract is to be found in the dowry register held in Rhodes. I have a copy if you want to see it.
The bride’s father is described as being in Australia at the time of the marriage, while the groom (Mihail) is described as a ‘fisherman’ by trade.
It appears that the couple remained on Castellorizo until after the War because they are listed in an October 1947 census taken on the island as part of the island’s union with Greece. The entry in the census reads as follows (as at 19 October 1947):
• Mihail Stavrou Kyzalas (father Stavros, mother Irini), born 1901 • Palassa Stavrou Kyzalas (father Antonios, mother Anna), born 1903 • Stavros, son, born 1929 • Christina, daughter, born 1931 • Constantina, daughter, born 1933 • Krystalla, daughter, born 1935
From the cemetery records, it is clear that Mihail died on the island aged 60 in, I would assume, 1961.
Thank you, I hope you can help me locate this family. Maria

Dear Maria We share the blessing of adoption, I, too, was born and adopted in 1956. I joined the forum to connect ancestors who fled from Crete and Paleomanina, Greece in the late 1800's and early 1900's. My birth mother was Constantina Diane Joan Raptes Bonnike; grandmlother Aspasea Apostolos and grandfather Theodore Raptes. Raptopoulos became either Raptes or Raptis upon arrival in USA, Australia, UK and Canada. I wasn't fortunate enough to meet my birth mother but her sister in law (related by marriage, not a blood relation to me) was kind enough to send me her death certificate. If you'd like to compare notes, let me know. I am 52 years old, female, married and reside in Atlanta, GA, but I was born in Arlington, VA.
Best regards Robin (aka: Patricia Diane Raptes)
