The Greek island of Kastelorizo, located in the so called “agoni grammi” will finally be included in the Olympic torch relay across the country that gave birth to the Olympic Games. The relay will go through some 40-odd towns and cities on a 1,800-mile journey before the flame is flown to Britain for the traditional inauguration of the London Games 2012, which are set to begin on July 27. The Hellenic Olympic Committee announces that on May 11, the Olympic Flame for the “London 2012” Olympic Games will pass from the island Megisti (Kastellorizo), following a decision by the Prime Minister Loukas Papademos and HOC’s proposal.
The Lighting Ceremony of the Olympic Flame will be held on May 10, in Ancient Olympia and the next day, the Flame will travel to Crete and will head to the most eastern part of the Greek territory, Megisti (Kastellorizo).
The President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Mr. Spyros Capralos, will be symbolically the Torchbearer on the border island.
The programme of the Greek leg of the Torch Relay will continue as announced by the HOC and on May 17,l the Handover Ceremony of the Flame to the LOCOG will take place at the Panathenaic Stadium.
