Hello Nicholas and Fellow Kastellorizans
Nicholas- I cannot thank you enough for your seemingly endless work on this site. I have just discovered this forum and am so impressed with your attention to detail, your knowledge and your dedication. Thank you so very much and thank you also to the many contributors. Please know how appreciated your labors are!
I live in the US and have 3d generation ties to Kastellorizo. I have few living relatives with memories of our Kastellorizan roots. Over the years, I have pieced bits of our family's story which is strongly rooted in Kalymnos but also Kastellorizo. While I have been able to find a great deal about my Kalymnian ancestors, tracking my Kastellorizan forebearers has been much more challenging for me. Here is a quick overview of what I know.
1- My maternal grandmother, Chrisso (Xrisoula) PETALAS, was born in Kalymnos in 1902 but raised in Port Said/ Port Taufiq Egypt. Her mother (my great-grandmother) Evangelia ATHERINOU was from Kastellorizo and married Sarandos PETALAS. I am guessing their marriage would have been in the 1880s. They had 10 children. My yiayia Chrisso was the oldest child.
2- I am told we also had Kastellorizan relations under the name HATZISPYROU but I am not sure how they fit into the story. Perhaps my maternal great-great grandmother?
3- Finally, one of my great uncles, was Dr. Skevos G. ZERVOS, from Kalymnos who played a prominent role in the the reunification of the Dodecanese islands with Greece in 1947. I mention him here as I noticed that Savvas ZERVOS is buried in the Kastellorizan cemetry and wonder whether one or more of SGZ's forebearers also had ties to Kastellorizo. Thank you for posting the translated list from the cemetery!
I have been blessed to be able to travel a fair bit in Greece but not yet Kastellorizo. The more I learn here, the more eager I am to experience this beautiful island and connect more deeply with my Kastellorizan roots.
I would be so grateful if you (or any of the members) know anything about my forebearers or can direct me to any useful resources. In particular, I am trying to fill gaps in my ATHERINOU and HATZISPYROU lineage.
With sincere gratitude,
Chrysso
