I am looking for anyone with links to the Kavouras clan. This family was originally from Livisi in Asia Minor, but moved to Castellorizo from as early as 1906.
Yeorgios Kavouras (the earliest I can trace) had at least 9 children, 6 girls and 3 boys in the second half of the nineteenth century. One of his sons, Konstandinos, married Chrisafina Antoniou Gemenis. Another son was named Dimitrios. The third son, Stamati, married Garyfalia Beigeorgi who hailed from Kalamaki, also in Asia Minor. The first son of this union, Yeorgios, became a famous (and widely-recorded) rebetiko artist in Athens before WWII, but died at the age of 36 in 1943. I believe his own son still lives in Melbourne and was for many years a musical performer himself.
Any information about the Kavouras family, and its links to other Castellorizian families, would be appreciated.
I have quite a bit of info on the families of the first two sons who migrated to WA. The info on my website is unchecked with family members (surname now Constantine). I can follow up with family members here if you wish as I am in contact with some of the family.

Thanks very much for the offer of assistance on this one.
Yes, I would be grateful if you could assist. I'm particularly interested to know what links, if any, Konstandinos's family in WA had with Stamati's family in Greece and what they knew, or were told, about the performer (their first cousin), Yeorgios Kavouras. As you might know, he is still considered one of the finest ever exponents of rebetiko song and was venerated by none other than the great Markos Vamvakaris in one of his own compositions.
Hi there, I read your message about kavouras family and saw the name beygeorgi. We have been looking for a long time for that name as probably our great great grandmother was named Cristalla Beygeorgis. Does this sound familliar to you?
I have a Kristalla Pegeorgi (nee Karpouzis) born c 1850 in Castellorizo who married Paraschos Pegeorgi (Beygeorgi) about 1870 in Castellorizo. Their five children changed their name to Lefkaritis as Paraschos was born in Lefkara, Cyprus. Later most of the family changed their name to Canaris. Could this be your G G Grandmother?
You might not be aware of the article on pages 25 and 26 of the late Michael (Stratos) Jack Kailis's book titled "From Kastellorizo....".
It reads "Bapou's other brother, Stamati, was the black sheep of the family. He married and moved to Marseilles in France. He had three sons, one of whom was names George. Apparently Stamati never communicated. By chance Mother later saw an article about a George Kavouras who had returned to Kastellorizo long after Mother's family had left. He was a violinist and concert musician. Mother endeavoured to contact this person to confirm her relationship but to no avail. There has been little or no contact with the Kavouras French connection. There was also a Kavouras family in Whyalla, South Australia, and I believe we are distantly related to them".
Thanks for your reply about my g g grantmother. Yes she is my g g gmother. And connected to the lefcaritis (dis) family. But i know that some people of the family assume that they are from cyprus. And even the first name of my g g father is what they think. But that is not checked as far as i know at least. Somebody told me that there were 5 generations of the Beygeorgi family at castellorizos. That is why i posted my message. Maybe to find a link.

The dowry archive contains two Beigeorgi weddings, both from April 1901. They are:
Yeorgios Konstandinou Beigeorgi who married Papadia P Karavelatzi on 8 April 1901; and
Triantafylia Konstandinou Beigeorgi (his sister) who married Ioannis Theoharis in 1903.
As far as the Lefkaritis name is concerned, there is only one entry - for a Christina Paraschou Lefkariti (your g'granfather's daughter, I assume) who married Vassilis Karastathis in 1912. Their contract also refers to the bride's brother, Ioannis Paraschou Lefkaritis, given that the father, Paraschos, had already died at that time.
I have wedding photo for George Lefkaritis and Anastasia Patagnas cir 1920 in Port Said that includes your G G Grandmother, Kristalla Beigeorgi (nee Karpouzis). I have not worked out yet how to include this photo within this forum.
If you haven't seen it do have a look at it on the URL:
This is my wife's family, Paraschos is her great grandfather. Yes we are trying to establish the origins of the Lefkaritis family on Kastellorizon. As far as we know Paraschos Pegeorgi is thought to come from Lefkara, Cyprus. Hence Lefcaritis "the man from Lefkara" is the family legend. He married Kristalla Karpouzis about 1870. They had 5 children:- John, George, Anastasios, Kristina and Michael. The men moved to Australia and changed their name to Canaris. Anastasios left his family behind in Egypt and his descendants are to be found in Greece, Belgium, South Africa and The Netherlands. (My wife's grandfather)
For the sake of putting the correct names in order we would appreciate more details of the pre-1900 Beigeorgi(Pegeorgi) family.
regards Brian ps we really liked the link to the cassie song
My name is Vanessa Kavourakis and I have just been reading the threads of this post with great interest. The photo that you have included is of my maternal great grandparents wedding - George and Anastasia! Their daughter (my grandmother) is Phyllis Apostoles (nee Canaris) who was born in north Queensland when her parents George and Anastasia came there after marrying in Port Said. George and Anastasia had 3 other children - Fred (who passed away in the early 1980's) and Doris who still lives in Ipswich.
I am looking after the family tree for the Lefkaritis/Canaris family. My wife's grandfather Anastasios was your George's brother.
We would appreciate it if you visit www.ozgenealogy.info/genealogy/ and look up your family and plese send me any updates by e-mail (off forum) You will not find Kavourakis because I was given the spelling of Kevarakis.

hi i am from Turkey. I had been in Kastellorizo 3 times and want to be there many summers also. I saw "Livisi" (Kayakoy in Turkish) in messages. I had been there. There is very impressive place. Great Architecture. There are many houses but none of them cuts others sight. Narrow streets typically greek architecture. Recommend you to see there.

I have just Joined the group and look forward to more contact. Unfortunatly my news is sad for today.
Today 19-7-2007 at 3.00 am in the morning, Esothia( Joyce ) Pavlakis passed away in the Sydney hospital, she was the last of 10 brothers and sisters 7 of which came to Australia on various dates the other 3 passed away much younger in various other countries she was the last of the seven that were decendants of Beigeorgi , now changed to Beis, Bayss Baiss .
Thanks for the various bits of info that have been provided. Take care.
I believe I have met your concert violinist relation in 1999 on a visit to Kassie, He played some music for us along the waterfront, unfortunatly I believe he passed away in approx 2005, apparently he fell into the harbour while walking along the shop fronts late at night and they found him in the morning , he was a real charactor and was partial to the odd beer etc. I had discussions with him about any knowledge of our family.

I have a Kristalla Pegeorgi (nee Karpouzis) born c 1850 in Castellorizo who married Paraschos Pegeorgi (Beygeorgi)
I'm descended from the Karpouzises, the earliest of whom I have in my database is Kostantinos Karpouzis (b.1803), who married Asimina Anastasa (1815-1905). I'm descended from their son Evstratios Karpouzis (1852-1897).
Try as I might, I can't link your Kristalla Karpouzis (whose father was Anastasis Karpouzis) into my tree. Kastelorizo is such a small island that it would be perverse for these two Karpouzis families not to be related. I don't suppose anyone has more information on the very early Karpouzises? Or on how these two branches might be related?
Yours triskaidekaphobically, Saint Simian, patron saint of evolution.
All we know is that Kristalla had two sisters Eleni and Magdalene (spelling corrupted from Greek to english and by time). The date of Kristall's birth is an estimation based on the birth of her first born Yannis Lefkaritis on 20 Dec 1873 in Kastellorizon.
Hi to all members and guests, My name is George Bayss ( Beigeorgi ) I am searching for any information to add to the " Beigeorgi " family tree. the smallest information could lead to a treasure find for addition to the history of this family. the names also used for this family could be Peigeorgi or similar. always glad to hear about possibilities
Hi George, We believe that my wife's ancestor was Parashos Pegeorgi born about 1850 of Lefkara Cyprus, died about 1880 in Kastellorizon. In fact Pegeorgi or Begeorgi (how it is Anglicized) may also be a nickname. Please e-mail me off list at firstname.lastname@example.org regards Brian and Chrystallo
I have had a look at your Bayss family in NSW and have documented the following info which you would know anyhow. However can you confirm my interpretation of some of the info. I list the early lines of your Australian family below. An assumption of mine is that George Beis who died on 31 Oct 1999 aged 71 years would have been the son of Constantine. Can you confirm if this is correct? There is a Judith Ann Beis who died in 1989 from Dean Park NSW and would be either George's wife or daughter. Can you advise on this?
There are only two NSW marriages 1945 and prior (NSW Marriage Index) for Bayss, Leo marrying Freda Stambolis at Paddington in 1944, and Michael marrying Eva Virginia Nilsson at Grafton in 1943. The other family members who came to Aus must have married overseas or married after 1945. Allan , you have been busy , if you wish to carry on with this then you need to try the other anglasised names of the family , Beis, Baiss, Bayss. I will go through the other data and advise on correctness as I know it. regards, George.
Is it possible to get a copy of the dowry documents for Garyfalia Beigeorgi, and of Triantifalia Beigeorgi, who married I Theoharis, I believe the latter may have moved to Australia and I am researching this further. do you have any further info on Theoharis family from Castellorizo or where they came from. I think there are Theoharises from other parts of Greece. there are a number of them in Australia, and I am trying to track the right branch.
You suggestion is interesting about the Beigeorgi name, when my grandfather was living on Kassie the locals used to refer to him as Bei. they would say like , "hello Bei " . I have looked into all sorts of variations and am unable to find any real connection. I have info from my cousin Heleni that their names were definatily Beigeorgi. I understand he was a real character around the Island and had some sort of reputation.
