Mihalakis/Michalakis, Mihali and Evangelia I am looking for information about my grandparents, Mihali and Evangelia Mihalakis. They left the island during the war and my grandfather was one of the casualties of the Empire Patrol. My Grandmother subsequently moved to Perth, WA where she lived till her death in the mid 60s. My mother, Chrissafina (Nina), was their youngest daughter and had siblings Christina, Constantine, Jack, Angelo, Maria, Nick, Evdokia and Vasilis. All except Vasilis, who lived in Piraeus, migrated to Perth, Western Australia, with Con, Jack and Angelo, who anglicized their name to Mitchell, moving on to Melbourne and Sydney. I am particularly interested in family history prior to their departure from Castellorizo. Terry Battalis Darwin, NT

Terry,
Your grandparents, Mihalis (Mihail) & Evangelia (nee Myrikli), married on 11 April 1904 on Castellorizo. Evangelia's family had connections with the town of Myra in Anatolia and part of her dowry included land there, as well as a house on the island and other gifts.
You probably already know that your grandfather was prominent in municipal life on the island and that he served in a number of positions. His tragic death with a number of other Castellorizian refugees aboard the SS Empire Patrol is recounted in Embers on the Sea (see Literature section of http://www.castellorizohistory.com) which also includes photos of your grandparents, mother and her sister Evdokia in Gaza.
Please let me know if you seek further information and thank you for supporting this Forum.

Terry: In the early 1980's, my husband flew fighter jets overseas, and we were stationed just outside of London, at RAF Lakenheath. One of my husband's squardron mates and our neighbor was a single male named Chris Mikolakas, although I admit not recalling the exact spelling of his last name. He married a lovely english girl who was almost a concert pianoist, and last I heard, they had settled in Florida, USA. He may still be flying for the airlines. I believe that was where his family resided, and thought it was worth a post as sometimes any lead helps connect a location with relatives who stay behind. Good luck! Hi Terry,
I remember you as a child in Carr St - West Perth/Leederville. If my memory serves me well, your family moved for a while to work in Whitnoom. I remember your Yiayia from your Dad's side. She lived a few doors away from us in Carr St West Perth.
You mum's sister Evdokia was my Greek school teacher back in the 1950's. Regards Evdokia (Eva) Koutsoukos
