The history of Greek immigration to Brazil reveals that one of the first groups of Greeks in Brazil were from the island of Kastellorizo.
In 1882, the ship Lefki Peristera (White Dove), led by Captain Savas Nicolau Savas (1858-1926) left Kastellorizo with about 100 passangers heading to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Because of damage to the ship suffered by a storm on the coast of Brazil, the ship was forced to stop in Florianopolis (capital of the state of Santa Catarina) where all the passengers remained for about 6 months while the ship got fixed.
As most of them were "escafandristas", it did not take long for them to find what to do and soon were integrated into the community. Upon the ship's departure, 40 passangers opted to stay.
Captain Savas made two other trips to Greece and and both times brought the ship full of Greek immigrants from Kastellorizo. In fact, the Captain himself settled in Florianopolis, SC with his family in 1889 where he became an important man in the political and social life. Thus, influencing many more from Kastellorizo to go to Brazil.
According to the "Enciclopedia Simpozio", some of the last names of such immigrants were: Athanazios, Atherino; Bercou; Christofis, Chrissaki, Chrysatakis, Chrystoval, Comninos, Constantopulos; Dimatos, Elias, Fermanis, Garofal, Haviaras, Ikonomos, Joanides, Kailis, Kalafatas, Karabalis, Katciped, Komninos, Kotzias, Lakerdos; Mazarakis, Pandazidis, Pitsica, Savas, Serratines, Sirydakis, Spyrides, Stavianou, Triantafilis, Tzelikis.
