Hi,
I would be grateful for any information on this family: Michalis Paldiri came from Makri in Turkey to Kastellorizo - however, his family name was probably Karageorgiou we think. The name Paldiri/s came from the Greek word for the Turkish style of pants he wore.
This is the family as far as I can reconstruct it to date, but guessing at grandparents names from the naming patterns of the children.
Georgios (Georgios Karageorgiou) PALDIRIS was born - possibly in Makri in Turkey.??
Georgios (Georgios Karageorgiou) PALDIRIS had the following children:
i.Pavlos PALDIRIS.
. Pavlos PALDIRIS married Maria ?? and they had 14 children...the dates are largely estimates only.
i. George PALDIRIS was born about 1876.
ii.Panayiotis PALDIRIS was born about 1878.
iii. Michalis PALDIRIS, born about 1880, Makri, Turkey; married Evanghelia DEKARISTOU, about 1918, Castellorizo, Greece; died about Sep 1941, Castellorizo, Greece.
iv. Nicholas PALDIRIS was born about 1881.
v. Simos PALDIRIS was born about 1882.
vi. Vassilis PALDIRIS was born about 1883.
vii.Maria PALDIRIS, born about 1885; married ? HADJIPETROU.
viii. Polixeni PALDIRIS was born about 1886.
ix. Irene PALDIRIS was born about 1887.
x.Chrissie PALDIRIS was born about 1888.
xi.Despina PALDIRIS was born about 1890.
xii. Athina PALDIRIS, born about 1892
Michalis PALDIRIS (Pavlos-2, Georgios-1) was born about 1880 in Makri, Turkey. He died about Sep 1941 in Castellorizo, Greece.
Michalis Palidiris was born in Makri, Turkey in 1880, one of twelve children - six boys and six girls born to Pavlos Paldiris and his wife Maria....
In his grandfathers time, the name was Karageogiou, not Paldiris. In those days, the men wore the vraka - but he was first one to get rid of the vraka and wear the Turkish style of pants they called Poldiri.
From mouth to mouth, the surname changed to Paldiris and then it has continued.
But Michalis grandfathers name was George Karageorgiou.
According to the records, Michalis Paldiris was the third child - he had two older brothers - George and Panayiotis.
Michalis left Makri for the nearby Greek island of Kastellorizo just before the World War in 1914 or 1915.
From Makri, they went to the coast at Kas, crawling at night time and sleeping under the bushes in the daytime.
On their way, they ran into a shepherd, a Turk, a very nice old man. He told them to leave the place quickly because he didn't want to be involved in their escape...but he showed them a hiding place and he told them to wait there. Then he sent his daughter with the mule with some food - pitta bread and a big bucket of fresh yoghurt. My father he was blessing that man always...
When they arrived in Kas on the Turksih coast , they split up - there were 31 or 41 men who had escaped from Turkey back to Greece.
We guess from there that they got a boat ride to Kastellorizo, the nearest Greek island which is only 3 miles away.
He married Evanghelia Dekaristou from Kastellorizo about 1918, about the end of World War 1.
They had two daughters, Maria and Evdokia.
I would be grateful for any confirmation or correction of the names to look for. I am also not sure where I need to look - was the family in Makri for many years, or had they come from Kastellorizo or elsewhere?
Any clues welcome,
Many thanks, Milli K
